A recent report on trademark application filings in the USA over the last 25 years shows that an applicant's chances of successfully registering their marks drastically improves if they use a trademark attorney rather than doing it themselves.
The report states that an applicant's chances increased by 50%. If a formal objection was raised by the Examiner during the application process then using an attorney made an even more significant difference - 68%. If an opposition was raised by a third party then an applicant who used an attorney increased its chances of registration by 52%. As it says "When a proposed trademark is important to an ... applicant, hiring an attorney may significantly increase the likelihood of overcoming barriers in the process and obtaining a certificate of registration."
